It was a real shock to Kenyans when the death of Mutula
Kilonzo was announced. No one could believe that the healthy 64 year old
champion of law had actually left us. The shock and unbelief of the glaring sad
fact could be read even from the faces of the country’s top security officers
who visited his home. No wonder such a detailed investigation process is on
course to get to the very bottom of the cause of this sudden death.
Leaving no stones
unturned
Mutula Kilonzo was a
man of firm stand, something that was not very pleasing to those, including
some powerful people in Kenya, who stood for a different course. Bearing this
in mind, the possibility of his being a murder case cannot be ruled out. This,
of course, forms part of the facts upon which investigations into his death are
based. The investigation that has been started focuses on food samples and
other exhibits that were collected from the senior counsel’s home.
A team of senior police officers has been formulated and put
under an Assistant Commissioner of Police to try to uncover the real cause of
death. On Saturday 27th April 2013, preliminary investigations were carried
out by pathologists and detectives at Mr. Kilonzo’s Kwa Kyelu Ranch where he
died. Dr. Oduor, who led the team of pathologists doing the preliminary investigations,
said they had sent samples from the scene to the Government Chemist. These
samples include vomit collected from Mr. Kilonzo’s home, food and two soft
drinks that were found in the room. Detectives also collected a shirt and a
pair of trousers that Kilonzo had been wearing on Saturday.
A team of several top notch pathologists are assigned to
carry out a series of tests on Mutula Kilonzo’s body on Monday the 29th
of April. The team will also be joined by Machakos CID Chief, Kavete Kuloba.
While all these tests are carried out, Dr. Oduor has warned
against early speculations saying that “circumstantial evidence of poisoning
may be misleading.” He also said that there is a possibility the tests could
fail to disclose the cause of death in which case they will have to wait for
the Government Chemist’s report. He said that urine would be very important in
establishing whether there was poisoning.
As the situation is for now, it is too early to make any
speculations as to whether Mutula Kilonzo was killed. We can only wait for the
outcome of the pathological tests and reports from the Government Chemist,
hoping that these will come soon and unhampered. May the soul of Mutula Kilonzo
rest in peace.
